The Victron Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC converter works like a charge controller, but for your alternator. It takes power from your vehicle's electrical system while the engine is running and uses it to properly charge your LiFePO4 (or other) battery bank — something most vehicle charging systems, which are designed and optimized for lead-acid batteries, can't do safely or efficiently on their own.

The Orion acts as an isolator, charging while the vehicle runs and preventing drain on your starter battery, while also acting as a smart charge controller that monitors your battery bank's state and delivers the correct charging voltage and current for it — like having an extra solar panel putting out full power the whole time you drive.
